Laura's Reviews

Laura's FanFiction Reviews...

The Sparks That Lit a Fire - is a snippet into the life of Johanna Mason, Hunger Games victor from District 7. She has just escaped the arena, and finds herself in hospital hating her supposed mentor who deserted her as she battled for her life.
It's written in past tense and from a first-person perspective. I like this approach becasue it effectively portrays an insight to Johanna's character. In the Hunger Games trilogy, she is somewhat hostile, and negative towards the protagonist. I like the fact that it visualises her thoughts, despite not being told directly by her. Although there isn't any dramatic tension in the chapter, the combination of the title and the conclusion leave the reader wondering what Johanna is capable of. This question successfully aroused my interest, luring me to read on.

Raging Fire - takes the original Hunger Games sequel "Catching Fire" but adds a different spin and a different turn of events. The reader is introduced to Rory, a close friend of the main character Katniss. From what I can tell, it's going to be Rory who is sent away to fight in the 75th Hunger Games, rather than Katniss herself returning to the arena.
This story is narrated by Katniss, so although I like the idea of taking the original and adding a different plot, some of the writing seems a bit repetitive. A lot of what is said in this Fan Fiction is information that is already established in "Catching Fire". It's almost like reading the same story, just worded a different way. I would be interested to see how the future chapters differ as the plot steers further away from the original storyline.

Death and Alligator Mutts -the title of this story suggests something quite gruesome and morbid. However, my opinion of the first chapter is that it's entertaining in an almost comical way. The story is written from the point of view of the Head Gamemaker, the person who holds all the power for the Hunger Games. The story begins with him watching as the tributes from each district are selected. I admire the creative approach to this story, the author has done well to fabricate a whole range of new characters, while still sticking the original themes.

Rue's Story - takes on the perspective of the young tribute girl from District 11.
It talks briefly of her life before she was reaped to be a competitor in the Games. Rue is a key character in the original book, so telling the story from her point of view has great potential. However I was disappointed by the lack of detail in this particular Fan Fiction.
It seems to jump between past and present tense, making it slightly hard to follow, and the descriptive language is minimal in my opinion.

Grow Together - is a prequel to the epilogue at the end of the Hunger Games trilogy. It tells of how Katniss and Peeta went from a troubled relationship with a dark and patchy past, to being happily married and supportive of one another. I like that the author wrote from Katniss' point of view, but we also get a glimpse into Peeta's feelings through the letters he writes. A lot of questions are unanswered, which is a good way to create curiosity and encourage the reader to carry on and find out what happens.
